This has the classic design of a cabinetmaker's or joiner's tool chest - same general dimensions, exact same construction methods. There probably would have been a few sliding trays or tills (sliding chests of drawers) on the inside that would run on wooden rails, and perhaps a few vertical divider boards as well for storing his many molding planes; if you see nail holes on the inside, this is where the rails or dividers would have been attached. This chest design would have kept the cabinetmaker's valuable tools of his trade readily accessible with the lock on the front keeping them secure. The practice was that the cabinetmaker brought his own chest of tools with him to his place of work when he was hired on - they weren't furnished by the employer - and they would have been left there at all times. Such a chest loaded with tools would have weighed several hundred pounds.
