The Impossible Hour:Race For The Record Hour: In continuation of the time trial sequence from Stars and Watercarriers, The Impossible Hour is a concentrated study of Ole Ritter's attempt in Mexico City in 1974 to set a new record for the hour - described in the film as "the noblest, most difficult record that can be set on a bicycle".
The Impossible Hour is a 1974 Danish documentary film about Ole Ritter's attempts to reclaim the hour record in Mexico City. The film was directed by Jørgen Leth and is described as a "concentrated study" of Ritter's efforts. It includes:
A black and white retrospective of previous record holders, including Fausto Coppi, Eddy Merckx, and Ritter himself
Color footage of Ritter's three record attempts, which all fail. Interviews with Ritter, where he describes his attempts to the press. A Mexican marching band on the bandstand. Slow motion to highlight Ritter's style. Shots of Ritter riding from a motorcycle moving around the track. Long pans of Ritter riding around the track during the record attempts.
Ritter was the first to take advantage of the thin air in Mexico City to set an hour record in 1968. However, Merckx broke Ritter's record in Mexico in 1972, and Ritter returned to Mexico City in 1974 to try to reclaim it.
