In Season 1, Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst who is secretly a vigilante serial killer, hunts the Ice Truck Killer, a serial killer targeting people from his past, only to discover the killer is his own biological brother, Brian Moser, and is forced to kill him. In Season 2, the remains of his victims are discovered in the ocean, leading the media to label him the Bay Harbor Butcher, while Dexter struggles with his "Dark Passenger" by joining a support group and dealing with his obsessive girlfriend, Lila, who ultimately kidnaps Rita's children and attempts to murder them before Dexter kills her.

In Dexter Season 2, the discovery of his victims in the bay forces the police to hunt the "Bay Harbor Butcher," an FBI investigation led by Agent Frank Lundy. Dexter is forced to hide his killings, attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and deal with his problematic sponsor, Lila. He also tries to kill the criminal Little Chino but is forced to frame Sergeant Doakes for his murder, a complex plot that sees Doakes die and the FBI's investigation zero in on Dexter.
