Rohloff 'transmission': 14 speed internal gear Rohloff hub (considered a 'transmission' by Rohloff) is superbly engineered and assembled in Germany and are $2500 - $3000 new when combined with shifter and external mechanism. Rohloff hubs are trouble-free, very durable, lasting up to 100,000 miles, truly an engineering marvel. Shifting to any of the 14 gears, is possible at stops or on the fly. The hub is maintenance-free except for changing hub oil every 3,5000 miles. No chains to wear out, and the belt-drive sprockets last the lifetime of the bike. Take this opportunity to have a Rohloff bike in your bike fleet.
The bike:Note: WTB tires and leather saddle have been installed (see last 4 photos). The shifter required special road handlebars that are assembled in 3 pieces. The hub was professionally laced to 700c rims. The Soma Wolverine frame is specially designed for belt drives with a break in the right seat stay to allow the carbon belt to be installed. Wolverine allows for wider gravel tires. The disc brakes are hydraulic and are very smooth.
The build: Over $5,000 invested in the bike. The bike and hub have just over 1,000 miles--the required 'break-in' for the Rohloff hub. The bike has only been ridden on smooth asphalt bike trails and never in rain or snow.
From Soma webpage:
The original inspiration for the Wolverine was “monster cross”, but it is seriously so much more. Its geometry is stable enough for off road touring, but sporty enough for all-around adventure and gravel riding. With its sliding dropouts, you can run single-speed, derailleur gearing or hub gearing (Rohloff, etc). With a split seat stay, it is specially manufactured for the Gates Carbon Belt Drive.
The price $1850 is firm and must be a local purchase as there is no shipping.
