Bought this bike ~1.5 years ago. The gears only shift from 1 to 5 when we first bought the bike. My kid never told me at the beginning. Otherwise, everything works fine. We rode in the neighborhood and bike trails with no issue.

Walmart is currently selling the exact same bike for $178.
