Wonderful bed for post-crib through early elementary school children!
Features:
* Fits standard twin size mattress (mattress *not* included)
* Raised sides to prevent falling out and step in area for easy in/out
* Made out of 3/4 birch plywood to put up with climbing and play shenanigans. It's heavy but no idea on the actual weight. More than a standard bed frame for sure.
* The front top serves as a shelf area for books and kiddo stuff
* Several light systems:
- An easily accessible switch turns on the side red "clearance" lights for nighttime "Moooooommmmm" parenting
- A dome light for a camper under the "cab" serves a reading light.
- The top light turns on and looks like a fire truck
- The lights are powered by a 12VDC adapter but there is a switch to shut the power off, or you could just unplug the adapter if the lights are problematic.
- Wiring is enclosed in flexible conduit to make things more resilient to curious hands.
* The bed has wooden slats to support a standard twin mattress. The slats are connected with webbing to keep them somewhat in place.
* The wheels rotate and don't actually support the bed. The supports are notched blocks of wood attached to the bedframe underneath. If you don't want the kids crawling underneath it, you can assemble it without the blocks and wheels and just rest the frame on the floor.
* There are two ladders on the sides which are attached with screws.
* There is a "back rest" (pine) that was added after the bed was completed, but has not been painted. There is about 1/3 gallon of paint left over that comes with it so if you want to make touch ups, or paint the backrest that should help. I've included a picture of the original Behr paint formula.
Pickup and dimensions
- It's put together with exterior construction screws and carriage bolts and comes apart into several pieces. The sides are the biggest pieces. The overall dimensions are 85" long, 44" wide and 50" high (plus about 5" for the light on top)
- You'll need something that can haul the large 85" x 44" pieces.
