Sherman Terrace condos were built in the 1940s. There are six units per building, all brick. They were built with plaster and cement, so you do not hear your neighbor walking around upstairs. Some have new wood floors and stainless steel appliances. Because of their age, the trees are mature, and there are quiet, shaded sidewalks and backyards. The winding street that meanders through the community is unlike today's cookie-cutter apartments.
Our unit is remodeled from the original design, with a modern kitchen, washer, and dryer. They are carpeted and have a tile kitchen and dining room. The living room is large enough to entertain, and the two bedrooms have built-in features you would not see today in the new apartments. The main bedroom is only slightly larger than the other bedroom. It has a wall of closets and ceiling fans in all bedrooms. The second bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and dresser. There is even a cabinet in the hallway just outside the bedrooms to store stuff.
The location is the best part. You are next to Tenny Park, where the Yaharha River flows. Along the park is the city bike trail, which has recently opened under the bridge's path so you can go from one lake to the other and never cross a road. This community was built just across the street from Lake Mendota and across the street from Maple Bluff. You are only minutes from the capital and the campus. You are far away from the foolishness but close enough to participate if you desire. You are located on the near east side, making it a snap to get on the highways or MATC. It is one of the best locations for "downtown" living without the hassles of parking and noise. Free off-street parking.
