Hey all

I'm an aspiring photographer looking to expand my portfolio and this is an excellent way to expand yours. I generally do artistic nude and fetish photography, but am also looking to do more traditional head and body shots (ie, it doesn't have to be nude work).

Amateurs are ENCOURAGED as I've found the results more "real" than with paid professionals.

Please drop me a line and I'll point you to my website which shows my current works and we can figure out some ideas from there.

NOTE: This is NOT a paid gig. TFP (Time for Pictures) means that both the photographer and the model donate their time and both get photos that they can use for promotional purposes and in portfolios.

Looking for someone to help develop/write sitcom pilot.
The general idea has been fermenting in my head for some time now so what I'm looking for is someone who can help me look at it from new angles and help with the actual writing of it. I am a somewhat experienced screenwriter in that I have taken a few courses that have involved it on some level. At the very least, I know the rules and conventions. Ideally, I would like to work with someone who has a different enough background from my own, that we're not coming at it from the exact same angle. I am a 23 year-old straight, white male from Beloit, WI. So black, 40 year-old, transsexual lesbians will receive top consideration (finally).

To give you an idea of what my sense of humor is, here is a list of shows I enjoy (and thus, plan on borrowing from in some capacity):
Arrested Development
The Office (British and U.S.)
Seinfeld
Simpsons (Seasons 3-10)
Larry Sanders Show
Freaks and Geeks
30 Rock
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Flight of the Conchords
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Weeds
Extras
Home Movies
Spaced
Peep Show
Mr. Show
Newsradio

If you enjoy any or all of these shows and feel like you are a competent enough writer to help me out, then contact me. I can't really travel so if you want to meet face-to-face and talk ideas, I'd prefer to do it downtown (near the State St. area more specifically).

"I know that Acrylic on top of an Oil based primer or house paint will not work."
actually, latex or acrylic on top of oil or alkyd enamel is fine since latex and acrylic flexes. when oil is applied on top of latex or acrylic the latex or acrylic will flex causing the oil to crack and "pop" off. i used to work at a sherwin williams years ago and learned this in their trining course.

"I agree with you that latex paint would almost certainly crack on a drop cloth or canvas surface."
the latex wont crack because it's very flexable, probably slightly more flexible than acrylic. i wouldn't think it's so much more flexible to cause a problem like the oil/alkyd and latex problems in house paints though. i don't know how flexible artists oils are when fully cured but i assume that if they are okay to use over gesso then they would be fine to use over latex.

"But this should be fun to mess around with. I'll post in a couple of days as to what I came up with and what worked for me and what didn't work. Thanks again."
no prob, i'll keep my eye out and if i come up with any other ideas i'll be sure to post them. i'm kinda experimenting with using both acrylics and spray paints and spray lacquers now. it's been fun and i've been getting interesting results. i've only been painting for about 4 years now, still don't really know what i'm doing but having a blast just the same ;)

You know I've heard or read ideas like that about using latex paint instead of gesso. I'm almost out of gesso, but I have about 12 cans of latex paint downstair and quite a bit of masonite. This will just be for me, but I'm gonna try that out tonight. I work in Oil so I'll see how that works, but technically it should work as I'll paint Oil on top of both Oil based primer and Acrylic based primers. I know that Acrylic on top of an Oil based primer or house paint will not work. I'm going to check to see if I have a drop cloth downstairs as well. I might. I'll try some of what gesso I have left on that. I agree with you that latex paint would almost certainly crack on a drop cloth or canvas surface. But this should be fun to mess around with.
i'll have to try the hemp canvas sometime, thanks for the info.
as for how coarse the weave is, it's fairly coarse. at least the drop cloth i bought was. and there was a seam in it as well so you may have to carefully plan how you stretch your canvases to get around that. or just leave it in there and use it in the painting if it's an abstract. could be pretty cool.
i would assume gesso works fine on the drop cloth but i haven't been using it for a while. since i'm quite the tight wad (lol!) i've just been using flat or satin latex primer or paint. interior or exterior works fine. i don't know if it'll work with oils, but it works fine with acrylics. before trying oils on latex with a full scale painting i'd just test a bit on a small patch of scrap of canvas to see what happens. i read about using the latex about 2 years ago when exploring ideas for gesso substitutes or possibly making my own. i learned that the home made gesso can only be used on non pliable surfaces like wood. if used on canvas it'll crack.
one other thing i've tried a couple times is use scrap material from fabric stores to stretch over frames. there's some interesting texture to be found there ;)
have fun!

If I remember right, they're kind of thick and don't really have much tooth. Or at least I think? Or some have seams? When you put Oil or Acyrlic Gesso on the drop cloth, how does it take the gesso? It's an interesting idea. I have to say I've NEVER thought of that.

That is a cheap and good alternative. Another great idea is using hemp canvas that can be purchased from Hempen Goods on Willie street. You can get it 50 inches wide and as long as you want and it is cheaper then the linen you purchase from art supply sources. You can also choose the weave from course to fine. I stretched a 50x72 inch canvas for an oil painting using one of the coarser weaves and it turned out great! Get painting!!!

in these hard economic times starving artists may be looking for ways to save a buck or two. i've found one! while wandering around the menards paint department one day the thought occured to me that canvas drop cloth may work as a suitable substitute for artists canvas. for some time now i've been going there to purchase their scrap 1"x2"s and 1"x3"s to make my own canvas frames (another good money saving idea, they're really easy to make). anyway, i purchased a 9'x12' drop cloth for about $30. granted, it's a rather coarse weave, but for the same weave canvas in the dick blick catalogue, without shipping costs, it was half the price. so paint away and save some green! ;)
another idea, and one i've not tried yet, painting contractors may be willing to give away old canvas drop cloths. for you abstract painters these may be ideal as they will have much interesting texture to play around with. i can't wait to find a contractor willing to part with their drop cloths! ;)
good luck folks!

I'm an art student, and I'm looking for work over the summer for extra cash and to stay in practice. My style is surreal and bright; I don't typically do portraits (unless you want it in a non-conventional style) and photo realism ain't my thang, but if you're looking for something funky, different, cool and maybe even a little awkward, I'm your gal.

Obviously, I'm a student, so I'm not going to charge tons of money for a painting, but I work with oil, it takes time, and I have a little bit of pride, so it's not going to be ridiculously cheap, either.

If you're interested/want to see examples of my work, email me and we can talk about details.

Scepticsystem,....as God as my witness, when I read your post I think I actually left my body. As I sit here staring into nothing, I realize that after reading your thoughts I've gone into a complete stupor. If you're a graphic designer, a portfolio is comprised of tear sheets from professionally paid work from legitimate companies. If you're a gallery artist, a porfolio is generally work you've sold in galleries before and your present body of work for sale now. Nobody,..and I mean NOBODY, has a portfolio of photographs taken of work they did on the side of their uncle Frank's garage. Whatever work you do for this person will NOT be used in a portfolio..ever. The completed work will NOT get you additional work. If the one chance in a hundered it does get you a referral, the second person will want that work for the same price you charged the first person, which was FREE! For all intents and purposes, you'll never go back into that house again, and you'll never hear from that person again. If anyone ever asks who did the work on the wall, the person will say, " oh, just some artist who responded to my craigslist ad, it was about two years ago." You had said that the purpose of Art was to " get it out there." I see it as one person getting free work done for the inside of their home. That's not " getting it out there." If it's important to get it out there, then why does it always mean that.....oh God I can't type anymore, I think I'm losing the will to live. Fuck it, never mind.

isn't the point of making art to get it out there? lets not attack this person because they want to showcase your work. imagine it as an opportunity to grow a portfolio and do something good for the community. really, are we all such bitter folks that the making of art isn't worth it unless you get paid some hefty sum? i say 'thank you' to the kind poster who wants to make the world a more beautiful place by hosting some art done by the community. perhaps he/she would've recieved less harsh criticism by suggesting they could provide some materials (since that can be really tough to manage for some of us without equal reinbursement)...however, if they don't care if its done in free house paint that you can get at the re:store...then what does it matter overall?
the community at large (especially that of artists) should really welcome the opportunity to do good work for good people. payment is certainly a plus, when its available. but on the grand scheme of things, an unpaid commission is still a commission. think of it as volunteer work (always looks EXCELLENT on a resume, right?).

so i say 'kudos' to the monona folks who want to make their home a work of art. if i felt i could, i would do something for you, and the twelve pack could even be nocked down to two bottles of fat tire and some cheerful, grateful company! :D

At least that would be honest. God how poor are you? Why don't you advertise for " FREE " painters, instead of " FREELANCE " painters? A 12 pak of beer is what,..about $8 bucks. You want 2 artists to show up on their own time and work for you to split $8 bucks. And you've already decided that the $4 dollars they do get will be spent on beer. Ooooh big spender! You get the work, and they get $4 dollars worth of beer. They'll never see their work again and will get no satisfaction at all. Where does the public get these ideas about contracting professional artwork or even student level work?

Artwork for Opening of Restaurant (Park St)

A new restaurant is opening and looking to fill the walls, ceilings, outside with new, eye-catching artwork of all kinds.

Currently, the idea is to give local artists the opportunity to display their pieces around the restaurant, along with artist info (e.g.--contact information and other pieces for sale). Every month or two, depending on the piece, the artwork would be changed out. It would be great to have a few core pieces that would remain in the restaurant until sold, relating to ice cream, food, or similar business intent.

The first "theme" I'm going with for the restaurant is very broad, basically just relating to the restaurant itself. The name is Carnivals and anything relating to food, ice cream or festivals would be up for consideration. Our menu will consists of soft serve ice cream, slush drinks, and a variety of hot sandwiches and cold sides. The grand opening is currently scheduled for June 20th. It would be ideal to get all pieces of art ready for display on Wednesday, June 17th.

If you have any pieces that you feel are what I'm looking for and would be available by the dates above, please let me know through email or phone 608-477-3247. I'm hoping to arrange to meet with everyone sometime between Sunday evening, Monday anytime, or early Tuesday.

Any additional pieces you have that do not fit the current theme, will be gladly considered for future displays and I will be contacting those in a few weeks.

Hello!

I have a fun idea for a children's book but I am not a author or artist... Do you have experience? Would you like to work on an idea together? Cute idea that parents would love to share with their kids.... Have been giving this idea to many parents through the years (friends and family) but thought a book may be rewarding, lucrative... just don't know where to begin. I currently work from home (not related to any of this work) and live in the Mt. Horeb area... can travel to you if necessary.

Would be looking for an author and artist. Will all work together! Can be a great opportunity for a student.

Hope posting on Craigslist will generate a very talented person!

I am an architect studying figurative sculpture on a very part time, occasional basis. I am interested in finding a few fellow artists who wouldn't mind serving as female figure models from time to time. I am especially interested in practicing with a variety of body types. My art budget is modest, but I would be happy to offer some reimbursement for time and travel or possibly barter for design/carpentry services.

Looking for art work to display and sell!! (Madison and Fitchburg)

Attention Artists:

Massage Envy in Madison and Fitchburg would like to display and sell your wonderful pieces of art in our two massage clinics (all profits go to the artist!!)

Finished and framed pieces will be displayed in the main areas of the clinic. All artists are encouraged to submit pieces, and several of us in the clinic will make a decision about which will be displayed. We will solicit new art approximately every couple months. We have a lot of wall space (different spaces that are approximately 6' x 6', 3’x6’, 6x3, 3x3, 3x9, 2x2) and we will select as many pieces as will fit and display nicely within this space. We also have some room of sculptures, pots, etc. on our shelves. Because we are a massage clinic, we are looking for more "calming" art.

If you are interested, please submit a digital image of your work, a description of its dimensions, a description of the piece (that can be printed on a 4x6” card that will be displayed along with your work), and contact information on you (name, address, email address, phone number) emailed to clinic0708@massageenvy.com or mailed to:

(608) 663-9300 (phone)
(608) 663-9302 (fax)

Please make your submissions by July 2009. Again, only finished and framed pieces can be displayed.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Disclaimer: Officially, you are loaning me your work to display in Massage Envy in order for us to sell it; you retain ownership and I will return your work to you (if not sold) when we get new art in. I will make every effort to protect your work from damage, and in fact, the clinic is locked during after 10 pm and is in a protected area with video surveillance. Nonetheless, you are making this loan to Massage Envy at your own risk; I cannot guarantee that your work will not be damaged by unforeseen circumstances. All profits go directly to you, the artists. Massage Envy will not take a cut for selling your art.

Thanks again,
Massage Envy
